Gaia, the primordial earth goddess was born out of chaos; and in a 360 degree twist, to chaos she seems to be descending anew of late. The tales in this exhibition take that environmental state of flux as their starting point in order to weave stories about challenges and despair but also of hope and underlying beauty.
The works on display also mirror the experience of their makers: four artists who left their native Spain to settle in London in order to develop their practice at different stages of their careers and at different times in the relationship of the capital with Europe. Two common threads stand out among the works, however. They were all prompted by an urgent call to attention to the plight of the environment: be it our oceans, rivers, forests or cities; but above all, they signal our complicity in the current estate of affairs.

'The Things We Leave Behind' by Susana Sanromán (Creative Hub: Level 3, Room E)
Multimedia Installation and Performance

Picture
'The Things We Leave Behind' performance at Hospital Club London, part of Spain Now festival and ARTCOP21

The artist presents an Installation made from 100% recycled bottles from Singapore; a space for reflection on the human footprint on our environment. Fair attendees will be able to create new pieces together with the artist during a series of activities focused on the public.

In addition, Sanromán will present her Live Sculpture/Performance The Things We Leave Behind, an environmental performance focusing on the impact of consumerist societies on the natural environment.

During the performance, the artist will mummify a model with nets and other residues from the fishing industry, all of them obtained from a beach clean-up. The mummy represents the idea of the human figure, and metaphorically the global society in which we live. In this visual game, Sanromán wants to show that everything we throw away will end up surrounding us.

Sanromán's taking part at WABGNET Exhibition: ‘Creation in Isolation – Navigating Absurdity in Times of Limitation’, part of Estonian Art Week

21/7/2021

Susana Sanromán presents her work 'En Tránsito. Geometrías en Suspensión' via augmented reality.
Picture

The WABGNET International Women Artists Exhibition mixes physical art exhibition adding elements of a virtual reality exhibition at the gallery space via augmented reality.

Creation in Isolation – Navigating Absurdity in Times of Limitation, as the title suggests, brings together works of art created during lockdown. The pieces, made by eleven women artists, conjure the sense and sentiment of absurdity we all surely experienced at some point during the long ‘stay at home’ months. Love, togetherness, separation, pain, resilience, loneliness, escapism, preoccupation, hoarding, cynicism, death, and hope are some of the themes explored.
Covid19, however, is not the first pandemic humanity has endured. So far, we have survived the Black Death, Cholera, AIDS, Malaria, and the Spanish Flu, among others. Besides, animals and plants also
suffer from devastating pandemics that are mainly caused by human action, such as intensive farming and the destruction of eco-systems. The death tolls experienced by such creatures are far worse than the ones humans do. It may sound absurd, but if human suffering is compared with non-human suffering, humans really ought to consider themselves lucky.

Picture
It is in this spirit, acknowledging how fortunate we are and embracing the positive possibilities that the new normal has brought about, that this exhibition has been curated: the restrictions imposed by Covid19 have not been perceived as limitations, but as an invitation to the exploration of new forms of remote collaborations that allow us to make, offer, and share art both locally and globally.

ART WEEK ESTONIA

Susana Sanroman presents  ‘This is rubbish’ at Parnu Art Week

21/7/2021

Sanromán will perform during  the 2021 Estonian Aart Week. The performance reflects on two highly topical issues: the Covid 19 pandemic and the effect of pollution on the environment.
Picture
Picture

The performance reflects on two highly topical issues that have put our daily future in check: the Covid 19 pandemic and the effect of pollution on the environment. Both in different ways force us to rethink our role in the global society to which we belong. The reality we live in has become alien, strange, and even incongruous. The daily images that we see of health personnel covered from top to bottom, and the streets with their passersby wearing masks, seem to come out of a futuristic and apocalyptic movie, which has become our reality. The performance embodys this new reality, sequences suddenly happen one after another. While walking around the city and visiting the events of art week, artist uses the surprise effect to dislodge the viewers, seeking to distance them from the obvious and force them to reflect on what is happening. The piece has a surreal character and can, at times, border on the absurd. The conclusion, if any, I leave it to the free interpretation of the audience.

Festival Theme: Thread of Life - The Absurdity of Time

The event’s title refers to well-known Estonian surrealist Ilmar Malin’s exhibition ‘Thread of Life’, curated by his son Jaan Malin, a.k.a. Luulur (1960). Jaan Malin is an Estonian poet, artist, curator, writer, editor and publisher who focuses on surrealist creativity and is serving as the curator of performing arts at Art Week Pärnu in 2021.

Exhibition details
Miniscule Venice  is taking place in Venice as part of the satellite programme of the 58th International Art Exhibition the Venice Biennale. The show could be regarded as a bijou sociological experiment; over 100 artists have taken up the invitation to submit a diminutive art object of any genre or media but with one simple proviso: the maximum size of the work is that of the common matchbox; 2” by 1.5”.
Thinking small and making small is a unique position and while some artists specialise in the miniature or reductive ideas and might consider it a regular part of their creative output, many more do not. For most of the artists participating in Miniscule, the format is an intriguing challenge; a stimulus or provocation; potentially a playful distraction from their standard artistic practice.
This diverse exhibition presents carefully considered, imaginative but seriously tiny, fragile art objects – an exquisite mass of breeding minisculism. As curator Vanya Balogh describes “Here we will find a toy-box destruction derby of high-concept in abject competition, a kaleidoscope cross-cut of current making and thinking but one set in an equal arena, although admittedly it may be biased towards the ‘less is more’ camp. Is an object to be judged by its size? Does size really matter? Can we say that the London Eye has more impact on the art world than a bicycle wheel?”

Sanroman's 'Present Imperfect, Future Tense; Vol. 2: Atlantis' included in  the curated selection of the World Photo Organisation open call

11/12/2018

We are pleased to present the curated selection of 18 projects from the inaugural Der Greif and the World Photo Organisation open call. Directed towards emerging artists working in the medium of photography, this opportunity attracted 1.157 photographers who submitted a total of 10.119 images.

Picture

Submissions were judged by Mike Trow, curator, editor and chair of the Professional competition of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards.

"Contemporary art photography is a tricky beast. What makes a photo story an art piece or something that stands alone? There are a myriad of theories but for me, and I hope you may feel something the same, the best art photography challenges norms and forces us to confront notions of existence and history, of uncomfortable sexuality, of the nature of liberty or repression and a myriad of ideas that photography can shine a light on," says Trow.

He goes on to say that he thinks the pieces chosen here give a roundup of where he feels contemporary photography succeeds. "Some of the selected works are by established artists and others not so much, but they all have a view of reality that gives us genuine food for thought. I know I may have missed many worthy pieces and to those artists who feel aggrieved, I apologize. But my choices here reflect some of my beliefs and a desire to broaden my understanding of the medium. Some are deeply emotional, dealing with notions of personal surveillance, others are about the body,  science and just the bizarre imagination made real. I hope this selection causes some debate - and it's legitimate to disagree with the choices. But I also hope this gallery manages to avoid cliche and is visually vibrant and stimulating - and also witty.  "The works all speak to me in different ways, very much in the way we like different music at different times and depending on the emotional state we are in.

Trow finds that to be able to look through so much work from around the world, by photographers who believe in what they do, think deeply about what it is they want to say and then to be able to execute the ideas so well is a privilege: "I found it very challenging mentally to have to make decisions on such personal work. The process of editing down made me question much about what is to like something and why. I like all the submissions here very much and because they are quite varied I have no particular favorite. But Der Greif is such an excellent and brave magazine to bring this work to the fore. It creates debate and gives great value to modern photography outside of our daily diet of retouched perfection and throw away images. They work with so many terrific curators and artists and I am fortunate to be a small part of this. Doing this gallery in conjunction with the World Photography Organisation will, I hope,l bring this work to a wider global audience and drive artists to push and experiment more with their practice."
