 | The WABGNET International Women Artists Exhibition mixes physical art exhibition adding elements of a virtual reality exhibition at the gallery space via augmented reality. Creation in Isolation – Navigating Absurdity in Times of Limitation, as the title suggests, brings together works of art created during lockdown. The pieces, made by eleven women artists, conjure the sense and sentiment of absurdity we all surely experienced at some point during the long ‘stay at home’ months. Love, togetherness, separation, pain, resilience, loneliness, escapism, preoccupation, hoarding, cynicism, death, and hope are some of the themes explored. Covid19, however, is not the first pandemic humanity has endured. So far, we have survived the Black Death, Cholera, AIDS, Malaria, and the Spanish Flu, among others. Besides, animals and plants also |
suffer from devastating pandemics that are mainly caused by human action, such as intensive farming and the destruction of eco-systems. The death tolls experienced by such creatures are far worse than the ones humans do. It may sound absurd, but if human suffering is compared with non-human suffering, humans really ought to consider themselves lucky.
It is in this spirit, acknowledging how fortunate we are and embracing the positive possibilities that the new normal has brought about, that this exhibition has been curated: the restrictions imposed by Covid19 have not been perceived as limitations, but as an invitation to the exploration of new forms of remote collaborations that allow us to make, offer, and share art both locally and globally.
